Thomas Merton and Spiritual Friendships

September 10, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

A Conversation with
Author Sophfronia Scott and Professor Alan Kolp
On Zoom

Thomas Merton once wrote of his correspondence with the novelist Boris Pasternak, “This human dialogue with Pasternak and a few others like him is to me worth thousands of sermons and radio speeches. It is to me the true King Dom [sic] of God, which is still so clearly, and evidently, ‘in the midst of us.’” Merton found hope in such special, spiritual friendships that provided affirmation for him as well as a home for challenging and fruitful dialogue.

Let us find and nurture this type of relationship. Author Sophfronia Scott, in conversation with  Professor Alan Kolp, will explore, through the lens of Merton’s connections, the concept of spiritual friendships, the effect they can have on our lives, and whether the way we live today encourages or inhibits such important connections.

$25

Sophfronia Scott is the acclaimed author of The Seeker and the Monk: Everyday Conversations with Thomas Merton. Alan Kolp, a retired Professor of Religion, is active in the International Thomas Merton Society.
