Sculpting Scripture
October 20, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Facilitated in person by George Matejka
Perhaps no other human activity displays the
interaction of nature and art as sculpture. A human
artist begins with a block of stone or piece of wood
and transforms the natural into a work of art, a
figure with human meaning. Faith-filled sculptors
imbue their works with meaning that can be
described as religious or spiritual. From its earliest
centuries, Christian sculptors have used scriptural
persons and moments as inspiration for their
creative endeavors. Our session will display images
of stone sculptures and woodcarvings that have
populated the two Christian millennia.
Our goal will be to bring these works of art to our attention and
allow them to reconnect us to the great moments and persons in our Christian faith tradition, and nourish once again our own faith.
