SUMMARY:Exploring Religious Thought Series
DESCRIPTION:Social Justice in Islam: The Principle of Zakat \nZakat is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam which states that all people who are financially able are required to pay 2.5% of their wealth to the needy. We will explore the Qur’anic basis for Zakat\, who is required to pay Zakat\, who are its recipients and the ways in which Zakat can be given out. The talk will also explore how Zakat and social justice function as important elements of Islam’s commitment to communal harmony and prosperity. \n\nZeki Saritoprak is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies and Director of the Bediuzzaman Said Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies\, at John Carroll University. SUMMARY:Exploring Religious Thought Series
DESCRIPTION:Quakers: Grounded in Presence\, Lived in Peace \nQuakers significantly extended the reforming spirit of the 16-17th centuries. Non-credal\, non-hierarchical\, universalistic and equal\, Quaker spirituality offers an alternative to other spiritualities. Quakers have been good partners in ecumenical and interfaith life and work. Quakers begin with experience\, then comes belief (doctrine). Experience impacts a way of life. This includes commitments to peace\, community\, simplicity and care for earth our home. \n\nAlan Kolp\, a life-long Quaker and Benedictine Oblate\, is an active member of the International Thomas Merton Society. He is recently retired as a Professor of Religion and Chair of Faith at Baldwin Wallace University.
