SUMMARY:A Lenten Journey with Thomas Merton (In-Person & Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Each Monday of Lent | 6-8 PM | In-person & Online\nWe will consider that the original purpose of Lent was to be a time when catechumens were prepared for baptism\, and public penitents were made ready by penance for restoration to the sacramental life in communion with the rest of the Church.  Lent is not a season of punishment so much as one of healing. Thomas Merton will guide us in our own individual and collective healing. \nLent programs of Easter preparation and quiet prayer time have been a favorite at Centering Space from the start. \nPlease email centeringspacelakewood@gmail.com to register. \n\n\n \nPowered by \n\n\n\nFacilitated by Betsy Nero and Carol Kandiko \nAs a non-profit organization\, Centering Space is reliant on retreat fees\, program donations\, grants and annual gifts for its operating funds. In order to continue to offer our services free of charge to those who cannot afford to pay\, we need to assure the viability of the organization through ongoing fundraising. \n

SUMMARY:Religious Thought Series: Restorative Justice & Breaking Cycles of Harm (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Restorative Justice & Breaking Cycles of Harm\nIn Matthew 25\, Jesus lists many of the ways we can love our neighbor: giving food to the hungry\, welcoming the stranger\, clothing the naked\, taking care of the sick\, and visiting the prisoner. We will learn about the way some people of faith are responding to the challenging call to “visit the  prisoner” through Restorative Justice Circles in correctional institutions. Restorative Justice practices can be used in a variety of settings and relationships to create lasting transformation and break cycles of harm for victims\, offenders\, and the community. \nFacilitated by Rev. Joanna D’Agostino \nRev. Joanna D’Agostino has been the pastor of Lakewood Congregational Church since 2018. She holds a Master of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary. She spent time as a Restorative Justice Facilitator in Wisconsin State Correctional Institutions\, and has since incorporated those experiences into many areas of her life and ministry in Lakewood. \nCentering Space provides a peaceful setting for spiritual renewal and connection with God. As an independent 501(c)(3)\, we depend on community support through fees\, donations\, grants\, and gifts to continue our mission. \n

SUMMARY:Religious Thought Series: What Paul Actually Taught About the End of the World (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:In the Twinkling of an Eye – What Paul Actually Taught About the End of the World\nA large segment of Protestant Christianity mostly in unaffiliated “free” evangelical and fundamentalist traditions continues to emphasize a literal return of Jesus to reign over the earth\, preceded by a strange world-wide disappearance of believers\, called the “rapture\,” based on two passages in Paul’s letters. But a growing number of biblical scholars\, including some evangelicals\, have concluded that Paul’s teachings on “salvation” and the so-called “end times” has been completely misunderstood by populist authors. In fact\, in many ways what he actually taught might even be stranger and more off-putting to traditional evangelical Christianity. \nFacilitated by Rev. James Butler \nJim Butler has been the pastor of Lakewood Presbyterian Church since 2001. He holds a Master of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theology Seminary and was awarded a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary for an ethnographic research project on suicide bereavement experiences among Christians and their implications for the practice of ministry. \nCentering Space provides a peaceful setting for spiritual renewal and connection with God. As an independent 501(c)(3)\, we depend on community support through fees\, donations\, grants\, and gifts to continue our mission.

SUMMARY:Managing Grief During the Holidays.
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Tom Pussel\nHolidays\, anniversaries\, birthdays\, and all those special times in life are moments to cherish and remember.  These occasions can be difficult when you have lost someone or something close to you.  The feelings of loss may overwhelm you as you face these celebrations without your loved one.  This program will give you some tips on things you can do to get through these times.  We will explore the myths surrounding grief as well as looking at what grief is and is not.  You will also be given insights on how to be a supportive friend for others going through grief.  Whether you or a loved one is currently “dancing” with grief this program is for you\, because at the end of the day 100% of us are grievers.\n$25\nTom Pussel currently serves at the Director of Outreach and Evangelization at St. Raphael Church.  He earned his Master of Theology degree in 2005 and completed his Clinical Pastoral Education at the Cleveland Clinic.  Tom is a grief recovery specialist and trained in the Enneagram.  He worked as a hospice chaplain and bereavement coordinator during the COVID years.  He and his wife Ross have three children and live in Lakewood
