SUMMARY:Sacred Art Retreat - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Lee Palencar\n“Christ in the House of Martha and Mary”\n(1654) Johannes Vermeer 1632 – 1675\n \nThe threads of worry and anxiety are woven into the fabric of our lives. In this demanding and needy world of today\, how can we find peace? Jesus lovingly and intimately admonishes his frazzled Martha to guide her in the way of his peace: “Martha\, Martha\, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part\, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42) Let us listen\, pray\, and discern his words for he is speaking to us\, too. Let us explore what the “one thing necessary” is. And let us discover in this beautiful painting by Johannes Vermer how composition\, postures\, gazes\, and colors reflect the Word and through truth\, goodness\, and beauty\, lead us to God.\n$30\nLee Palencar is a retreat and program director\, educator\, author\, and artist. She has a BA with double majors in art and history from Grand Valley State University\, Grand Rapids\, Michigan and earned a Master of Arts in Sacred Art from Pontifex University in 2022. With more than 15 years experience as a retreat and program director\, she focuses on sacred art and other forms of spiritual expression including writing\, journaling\, and prayer. Lee’s passion for sacred art is deeply intertwined with her faith and creativity. She finds profound inspiration in the works of European masters\, whose timeless pieces continue to influence her teaching and workshops. This connection to historic art forms and spiritual themes allows her to guide others in exploring the divine through their own creative expressions. \n

SUMMARY:Reading the Bible from the Underside: A Journey of Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Alex Lopez\n\nThis program invites us to interpret the Bible through the eyes of those who have been historically marginalized —   by race\, class\, gender\, or other social factors. We’ll explore how those who benefit from unjust structures have used the Bible to justify their worldview and make their perspectives normative. Alex will guide us to recognize the importance of prioritizing the voices and experiences of those who have been disenfranchised and oppressed.\nAll are welcome to engage in this eye-opening perspective on the cherished words\nof our spiritual tradition.\n$25\n  \nAlex Lopez is an experienced educator who moves in the space between philosophy and theology. He currently serves as lecturer at Cleveland State and John Carroll University\, in addition to being a member of the theology faculty at Saint Joseph Academy. Beyond his academic commitments\, Alex passionately advocates for the Earth and all its inhabitants.\n
