SUMMARY:The Power of the Story
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Pastor Dennis Stylski\nVictor Hugo once said\, “To love another person is to see the face of God.” How do you picture Jesus? Where does your picture of Jesus come from? What informs it? Who in this world does your picture of Jesus resemble?\nUsing pictures (because a picture is worth a thousand words) we will discuss what image of Jesus is drawn from Gospel passages.\nJoin us for a fresh new look at the power of the story.\nDennis Stylski\, a pastor for 46 years\, has spent time in the Middle East studying the lore of that region.\nHe brings a rich understanding of Scripture from the past to today. \nWe welcome donations.  \n  \n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art and Poetry of the Garden of Eden
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Matt Gesicki on Zoom\n \nJoin us for a contemplative experience of the monastic practice of lectio divina applied to classical art and contemporary poetry\, on the theme of the Garden of Eden in Genesis. In 2020\, American poet Louise Glück received the Nobel Prize in Literature “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.” Poems for this program will be selected from Glück’s collection The Wild Iris\, in which a trio of voices—the voice of God the distant Creator\, the voice of a human gardener\, and the collective voices of the flowers tilled by the gardener—join to offer a testimony on faith\, suffering\, creation\, and resurrection. Images from William Blake’s illustrations for Paradise Lost will also be included.\nClassical art and contemporary American poetry inspired by the theological themes of the beginning of Genesis will provide material for a contemplative experience of faith\, suffering\, creation\, and resurrection.\n$20 \nMatt Gesicki is currently the Community Outreach and Education Coordinator with NAMI Greater Cleveland. He earned a Master of Divinity in Psychology and Religion from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He lives in Lakewood\, Ohio.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Eldering and the Caravan of Time
DESCRIPTION:We hope to reschedule for a later date.  Stay tuned!\nJim Kulma\, M.Div.\nUsing ‘eldering’ as a verb\, rather than the  noun ‘elder\,’ emphasizes the active aspect of this phase of life. Elders are called to explore how they may be perfectly positioned to add value to the world through service and wisdom sharing as well as having the luxury of time to engage in their own personal spiritual growth and life reflection.\nJim will discuss key elements of elderhood in our culture and society. While we have more elders and olders now than ever before (10\,000 persons retire each day)\, the function of eldering and wisdom-keeping has gone dormant in many ways.\nThis presentation might be in person…stay tuned.\n$15\nJim Kulma retired on January 6\, 2021 after serving as a healthcare chaplain for 33 years\, and 36 years of ordained ministry.  He has served at Lutheran Hospital\, Hospice of Cleveland Clinic\, Lutheran Home at Concord Reserve and MetroHealth Medical Center. \nJim has certifications as a Tai Chi teacher\, Spiritual Director and Grief Recovery Specialist. He earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary\, Columbia\, South Carolina\, and received a B.A. degree from Bowling Green State University. \nJim is a member of the Network of Biblical Storytellers.  He has trained with its founder Dr. Thomas Boomershine\, and performs Biblical stories across northern Ohio.  He lives in Lakewood with his wife\, Toni and is thoroughly enjoying his one and only grandson\, Will.

SUMMARY:The Canaanite Woman
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Ben Bagocius on Zoom\nThe Canaanite Woman is a tribute to mothers of children with severe disabilities\n \nThe Canaanite Woman pauses to hear a visionary voice sidelined across biblical history: a mother of a daughter with a severe disability. The poems draw from a figure in the Book of Matthew\, an unnamed Canaanite woman\, who visits Jesus to speak with him about her daughter’s disability. Matthew’s gospel gives the Canaanite woman’s perspective only eight lines. \nBen’s collection pauses with this mother for considerably longer so that we might hear what she has to teach Jesus and us about hope + thriving in a culture of systemic ableism. The poems pay tribute to caregivers\, especially mothers\, who raise children with severe disorders. In the book\,The Canaanite Woman\, Jesus sits down and takes notes about muscular love from this woman prophet who was ahead of Jesus’s time and ours. \nLet’s follow her. \n$15 \nBenjamin Bagocius\, M.F.A.\, Ph.D. Writer. Teacher.
