SUMMARY:One Way to Look at Conversion
DESCRIPTION:Carol Kandiko\, CSA\n \n\nEach of us uses words according to our own point of view. Occasionally we are surprised to learn that others have different opinions. No matter what their definition in the dictionary words take on a variety of connotations. This friendly conversation is designed to clarify one’s own use of the word ‘conversion’ and to enrich our respect for the opinion of others. Come prepared to share! $10\n

SUMMARY:The Five Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary: How Artists Painted these Biblical Stories
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by George Matejka\n\nThese Gospel stories have been popular subjects for artists throughout the Christian era.  We will explore how various artists throughout the centuries have chosen to represent these stories in their paintings.  We will note how some details seem to be common to most representations.  And\, we will also point out how various artists go against the traditional manner of portraying these scenes.\n$15\n  \n  \nGeorge Matejka\, Ph.D. is a recently retired Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Ursuline College.  He holds a Master’s in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America and the Ph.D. in Philosophy from Duquesne University.  He also holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology with a Specialization in Biblical Studies from the Gregorian University\, Rome\, Italy.  Before his appointment to Ursuline\, George served on the faculties of Borromeo College of Ohio from 1982-1991 and Notre Dame College of Ohio from 1992-1999. \n Now as an adjunct professor at Ursuline\, George continues to teach Bioethics\, a course required for all Ursuline nursing majors.  Because of his expertise in Bioethics\, George has been appointed to and currently serves on the Ethics Committees of both St. Vincent Charity Medical Center and Jennings Center for Older Adults.  \nGeorge has a strong interest in the ethical dimension of human relationships with animals and has lectured at the National Animal Rights Conference several times.  He has published reviews of several books in the field of Animals and Ethics.  George has lectured at conferences at Oxford University\, England\, as well as at Yale University and Michigan State University.  Locally\, George has offered conferences on biblical\, ethical\, and theological topics in parishes throughout the Diocese of Cleveland.  \nGeorge has served both as a faculty member and a Board member of the Cleveland Ecumenical Institute for Religious Studies for several years and presently serves as the Board President. George resides in Lyndhurst with his cats Jazzy and Sparky. \n

SUMMARY:A Fresh Start: A Spiritual Poetry Workshop to Revive\, Refresh\, and Renew
DESCRIPTION:Part Two\nWith Ben Bagocius\n\nJoin us for a casual online gathering to read\, revel in\, and write poetry about fresh starts. Together we’ll turn to poems about beginning again by Lisel Mueller and Major Jackson to throw open discoveries about renewal. A series of prompts will guide us to write and share our responses as well as our own poems in an informal space of openness\, wonder\, and fun.\nSo please bring a notebook and writing utensil. Come to write and share your ideas\, or just listen\, knit\, or drink coffee. Let’s gather together and learn from poetry and from each other the joy and release of a fresh start.\n$15\nBenjamin Bagocius\, M.F.A.\, Ph.D. Writer. Teacher. SUMMARY:Renewing the Sacred Fire: Meet Ofelia Rivas of the O'odham Tribe
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nA Conversation with Ofelia Rivas\nfacilitated by Robert Toth\n$15 per session or $55 for all four  \nThrough sharing traditional stories and her life experience Ofelia will interweave the central concepts and beliefs that form the foundation of a Native American worldview grounded in a relationship with Nature and a spirituality that recognizes the sacredness of all being. \nFor centuries indigenous people throughout the world lived in ways that maintain a balance between humans and our relationship with all other beings. Over time\, anthropocentric cultures ignored the indigenous wisdom and disrupted the balance. Native perspectives reach deep into the heart of an emerging consciousness that is both ancient and new. \nIn 1947 John Collier\, Commissioner for the Bureau of Indian Affairs\, wrote:  “They had what the world has lost. They have it now. What the world has lost\, the world must have again.  The deep cause of our world agony is that we have lost the passion and reverence for human personality\, and for the web of life\, and the earth which the American Indians have tended as central\, sacred fire since before the Stone Age. Our long hope is to renew that sacred fire in us all.“ \nForty-five years later\, Ewert Cousins\, theologian and scholar of world spirituality\, wrote about his experience living with the Sioux on the Rosebud Reservation.  “Although I did not realize it at the time\, I had entered a world of primal consciousness of such basic things as space\, nature\, and the animal world\, time\, family\, and tribe that was decisively different from my own. I became increasingly aware of human values that the Indians preserved and that we had lost: their love of the land\, their organic harmony with nature. As we look toward the twenty first century with all of the ambiguities and perplexities we experience\, Earth is our prophet and the indigenous peoples are our teachers.’ \nOfelia Rivas writes of herself: “My people are the O’odham from the desert\, O’odham means people. The O’odham oral history teaches us where and when we originated and how to live on the land and follow our way of life called the Him’dag.  The traditional O´odham hold their alliance to Mother Earth. No written documents required.  I carry the words from my traditional elders and ceremony leaders that call for solidarity to defend the sacred places of our people for our survival. \n

SUMMARY:Artists as Authors:  How Paintings Have Influenced our Interpretation of the Bible
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by George Matejka \nMany biblical passages are silent when it comes to details regarding particular stories.  For example\, the Hebrew text states that Adam and Eve ate a piece of fruit (not an apple).  Over the centuries\, artists have frequently painted this scene with the fruit being an apple.  As we read the text of Genesis today\, we find ourselves imagining the fruit as an apple because we have seen paintings representing the fruit as an apple. \n\nWe will explore this and other biblical stories where artists have imagined (and painted) into their works details that are not explicitly stated in the biblical text.\nWhat impact do these artistic innovations have on our reading and interpretation of biblical texts? \n$15\nGeorge Matejka\, Ph.D. is a recently retired Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Ursuline College.  He holds a Master’s in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America and the Ph.D. in Philosophy from Duquesne University.  He also holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology with a Specialization in Biblical Studies from the Gregorian University\, Rome\, Italy.  Before his appointment to Ursuline\, George served on the faculties of Borromeo College of Ohio from 1982-1991 and Notre Dame College of Ohio from 1992-1999.\n\n Now as an adjunct professor at Ursuline\, George continues to teach Bioethics\, a course required for all Ursuline nursing majors.
