SUMMARY:Becoming the Mystics and Prophets We Are Born to Be with Jan Phillips
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe are currently in the throes of an evolutionary advance. Covid-19\, George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, a nation reckoning with its racist history\, communities spiraling toward poverty—all this darkness is fertile territory for prophetic voices. Cultural creators are finding their voices and committing to a future that is different from the past. Concerns about healthcare\, climate change\, and education of our children are affecting everyone. Change is the only constant\, and our job is to navigate the turbulent waters\, speak our truths\, and bring about change that serves the whole.\nHealing the world\, after all\, begins with healing ourselves. This means that we become the greatest light in the world when we master our own ordeals and connect our creative potential with our spiritual power. When our words and actions are rooted in our spiritual commitments\, we become a light in the world and a force for good.\n\nJan will help you reconnect your brain and heart\, your body and spirit\, and return to your creative core so you can discern what next steps are yours to take on this journey to higher consciousness.\n\nEvery participant will receive a complimentary pdf of Jan’s award-winning book\, No Ordinary Time—The Rise of Evolutionary Creativity and Spiritual Intelligence.\n  \nProudly Presented in partnership with River’s Edge!\n \nFee: $25\n \nPlease visit http://riversedgecleveland.com/speakers to register

SUMMARY:Renewing the Sacred Fire: Meet Ofelia Rivas of the O'odham Tribe
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nA Conversation with Ofelia Rivas\nfacilitated by Robert Toth\n$15 per session or $55 for all four  \nThrough sharing traditional stories and her life experience Ofelia will interweave the central concepts and beliefs that form the foundation of a Native American worldview grounded in a relationship with Nature and a spirituality that recognizes the sacredness of all being. \nFor centuries indigenous people throughout the world lived in ways that maintain a balance between humans and our relationship with all other beings. Over time\, anthropocentric cultures ignored the indigenous wisdom and disrupted the balance. Native perspectives reach deep into the heart of an emerging consciousness that is both ancient and new. \nIn 1947 John Collier\, Commissioner for the Bureau of Indian Affairs\, wrote:  “They had what the world has lost. They have it now. What the world has lost\, the world must have again.  The deep cause of our world agony is that we have lost the passion and reverence for human personality\, and for the web of life\, and the earth which the American Indians have tended as central\, sacred fire since before the Stone Age. Our long hope is to renew that sacred fire in us all.“ \nForty-five years later\, Ewert Cousins\, theologian and scholar of world spirituality\, wrote about his experience living with the Sioux on the Rosebud Reservation.  “Although I did not realize it at the time\, I had entered a world of primal consciousness of such basic things as space\, nature\, and the animal world\, time\, family\, and tribe that was decisively different from my own. I became increasingly aware of human values that the Indians preserved and that we had lost: their love of the land\, their organic harmony with nature. As we look toward the twenty first century with all of the ambiguities and perplexities we experience\, Earth is our prophet and the indigenous peoples are our teachers.’ \nOfelia Rivas writes of herself: “My people are the O’odham from the desert\, O’odham means people. The O’odham oral history teaches us where and when we originated and how to live on the land and follow our way of life called the Him’dag.  The traditional O´odham hold their alliance to Mother Earth. No written documents required.  I carry the words from my traditional elders and ceremony leaders that call for solidarity to defend the sacred places of our people for our survival. \n

SUMMARY:Keeping Green: A Retreat with Hildegard of Bingen
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Kim Langley\n \n\n“O\, You who are ever giving life to all life\, moving all creatures\, root of all things\, washing them clean\, wiping out their mistakes\, healing their wounds\, You are our true life\, luminous\, wonderful\, awakening the heart from its ancient sleep.” ~ Hildegard of Bingen \nHildegard has been called one of the most important women of her age\, and described as the “Sibyl of the Rhine” for her wisdom\, and influential writings. She’s one of only 4 women to be named a doctor of the church. \nShe was born in 1098\, but has been rediscovered in the last 40 years\, and a flurry of books\, articles and films have generated a passionate group of admirers for her as a writer\, composer\, philosopher\, herbalist\, Christian mystic\, artist\, visionary\, and polymath. \nHildegard seems almost contemporary in her thinking\, and she is a foremother of eco-spirituality. Her music and art have inspired wide audiences\, and her spiritual writings are uplifting\, challenging and deeply comforting all at once. \nShe was no stranger to controversy\, and like her contemporary\, Eleanor of Aquitaine\, Hildegard was a woman of substance. She corresponded with theologians and leaders\, suffered terrible headaches and illness\, and established monasteries\, all with a graceful reliance on God. \nHildegard was an unflagging advocate for every human person to develop their God-given talents. She spoke her mind and was undeniably feisty! She did not hold back because she was a woman\, or even draw back from rebuking the pope and emperor when she felt it was needed. \nWe will dip into her fresh and nearly modern writings\, explore her optimistic and positive spirituality which focused on the “greening” of the soul\, and have quiet time to rest and reflect\, hear her music\, see some cuts from award winning films of her life. \nImagine the refreshment of spirit to be gained from spending a retreat with Hildegard\, who said “The earth of humankind contains all moisture\, all verdancy\, all germinating power. It is in so many ways fruitful.” Together we will hope to participate in the fruitfulness of this extraordinary woman. \n$10 / session

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nA Conversation with Ofelia Rivas\nfacilitated by Robert Toth\nSession 1                Meet Ofelia Rivas   Background and History\nThis will set the stage for Sessions 2-4.\nSessions 2 – 4        Conversations with Ofelia\n$15 per session or $55 for all four  \nThrough sharing traditional stories and her life experience Ofelia will interweave the central concepts and beliefs that form the foundation of a Native American worldview grounded in a relationship with Nature and a spirituality that recognizes the sacredness of all being. I carry the words from my traditional elders and ceremony leaders that call for solidarity to defend the sacred places of our people for our survival.” \n

SUMMARY:Eldering and the Caravan of Time
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Jim Kulma\, M.Div.\n\nThe presentation will discuss key elements of elderhood in our culture and society. While we have more elders and olders now than ever before (10\,000 persons retire each day)\, the function of eldering and wisdom-keeping has gone dormant in many ways.\nBy considering eldering in our time\, we can come to a new awareness of those who have gone before us and their impact on our lives today.  We also hope to raise our awareness of those who will come four or five generations in the future. \nThe term “Caravan of Time” will suggest a new way to look at the metaphor of time and our journey with “those who have gone before and those who will come after.” \nOur time will include a “heart meditation” and time for Q & A.\n$15 \nJim Kulma retired on January 6\, 2021 after serving as a healthcare chaplain for 33 years\, and 36 years of ordained ministry.  He has served at Lutheran Hospital\, Hospice of Cleveland Clinic\, Lutheran Home at Concord Reserve and MetroHealth Medical Center. \nJim has certifications as a Tai Chi teacher\, Spiritual Director and Grief Recovery Specialist. He earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary\, Columbia\, South Carolina\, and received a B.A. degree from Bowling Green State University. \nJim is a member of the Network of Biblical Storytellers.  He has trained with its founder Dr. Thomas Boomershine\, and performs Biblical stories across northern Ohio.  He lives in Lakewood with his wife\, Toni and is thoroughly enjoying his one and only grandson\, Will.
