SUMMARY:Art and Poetry of the Annunciation
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Matt Gesicki \n \nEnter into a state of stillness and rumination by joining us for a contemplative hour of lectio divina and visio divina with art and poetry inspired by the Annunciation. Participants will be led through the contemplative practices of lectio divina\, or “holy reading\,” and visio divina\, or “holy seeing\,” a method of guided imagery in the spirit of icon viewing in the Orthodox tradition. Paintings will be selected from Botticelli and Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, and poetry will be drawn from the contemporary poet Mary Szybist’s Incarnadine—a collection of poems inspired by the Annunciation and Mary’s experience of being “overshadowed by the Most Holy.” \nThe Annunciation is the moment in history where the numinous encounters humanity. Classical art and contemporary poetry inspired by the scene of the Annunciation will provide material for an intimate contemplation of the Virgin Mary’s experience of being “overshadowed by the Most Holy.” \n  \nMatt Gesicki is currently a Volunteer Coordinator with Grace Hospice.\nHe earned a Master of Divinity in Psychology and Religion from Union Theological Seminary.\nHe lives in Lakewood\, Ohio. \n$10 \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Pastor Dennis Stylski \n \nLent is a time of repentance\, discipline and learning. \nThe biblical story is a marvelous tapestry created by many weavers of tales over many centuries\, each with a different understanding of history\, of the relationship of God to the covenant community\, and of how people in that community should believe and act. Join us for this Lenten bible study as we celebrate different interpretations in their uniqueness rather than trying to reconcile them. \nJoin us for this Lenten Bible Study as we celebrate different interpretations in their uniqueness rather than trying to\nreconcile them.\nPhoto by Rob Blair \nBible stories have come to us through layers of retelling in diverse languages and cultures. SUMMARY:Integral Christianity - A Book Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Mike Reiling\n \n  \nIntegral Christianity:\nThe Spirit’s Call to Evolve by Paul R. Smith\nA Book Conversation via Zoom \nSundays: February 21\, 28\,  March 7\,14\, 21\, 28\, 2021 \n7 pm – 8:30 pm \nSession Facilitator: Mike Reiling \n  \n  \nUsing the influential Integral Philosophy popularized by Ken Wilber\, Paul R. Smith in Integral Christianity lays out a unique\, provocative\, and insightful understanding of “developing and evolving churches”. In our sessions\, we will examine states of consciousness and developmental stages of consciousness\, applying them to individual church members and to churches in their different stages of evolution. From an evolutionary and integral perspective\, there are many churches\, often together in the same building!  Fascinating\, unique\, and enlightening – this book also provides contemporary understandings of God\, prayer\, and worship. \nYou will need the book for these sessions. There will be weekly readings starting after the first session. You can get the book through a local library\, or through Amazon as a book (new or used) or as a Kindle read. \nSession 1 (2/21): Introduction to Integral Thought and Spiral Dynamics (Stages of Human Development). No Reading. \nSession 2 (2/28):  Evolving Stages in Individuals and Churches 1: Tribal\, Warrior\, Traditional. SUMMARY:Soil and Sacrament - A Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Betsy Nero\n\nBased on the book\nSoil and Sacrament:A Spiritual Memoir of Food and Faith\nby Fred Bahnson \n\n“A POWERFUL\, PERSONAL STORY OF HOW GROWING AND SHARING FOOD PULLS US CLOSER TO GOD \nPart spiritual quest\, part agricultural travelogue\, this moving and profound exploration of the joy and solace found in returning to the garden is inspiring and beautiful. \nSoil and Sacrament tells the story of how Bahnson and people of faith all over America are re-rooting themselves in the land\, reconnecting with their food and each other\, and praying with their very lives the prayer of the early Christian monks: “We beg you\, make us truly alive.” \nSoil and Sacrament is a book about communion in its deepest sense—an inspiring and joyful meditation on what grows above the earth\, beneath it\, and inside each one of us.”  review/quote from Amazon \n$15/session or $25 for both

SUMMARY:God and Evil: Two Biblical Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by George Matejka\n \nThe Old Testament [or\, Hebrew Scriptures] preserve(s) narratives [or\, stories] that speak about the ways God has acted.  Some of these stories depict a God who responds to evil with violence.  Recall the stories of the flood and of Sodom and Gomorrah.\nYet other stories describe a God who eschews violence in dealing with evil.  In the story of Adam and Eve as well as that of Cain and Abel\, God deals with evil by way of (nonviolent) expulsion of the evildoers.\nThese two traditions carry over into the Gospel narratives about Jesus.  Understanding the manner of Jesus’ response to evil can provide us with important insights into our own efforts to be faithful disciples of Jesus as we face the challenges of evil in our own lives.\n$15 / session or $35 for all three sessions.\nGeorge Matejka\, Ph.D. is a recently retired Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Ursuline College.  He holds a Master’s in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America and the Ph.D. in Philosophy from Duquesne University.  He also holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology with a Specialization in Biblical Studies from the Gregorian University\, Rome\, Italy.  Before his appointment to Ursuline\, George served on the faculties of Borromeo College of Ohio from 1982-1991 and Notre Dame College of Ohio from 1992-1999. \n Now as an adjunct professor at Ursuline\, George continues to teach Bioethics\, a course required for all Ursuline nursing majors.  Because of his expertise in Bioethics\, George has been appointed to and currently serves on the Ethics Committees of both St. Vincent Charity Medical Center and Jennings Center for Older Adults.  \nGeorge has a strong interest in the ethical dimension of human relationships with animals and has lectured at the National Animal Rights Conference several times.  He has published reviews of several books in the field of Animals and Ethics.  George has lectured at conferences at Oxford University\, England\, as well as at Yale University and Michigan State University.  Locally\, George has offered conferences on biblical\, ethical\, and theological topics in parishes throughout the Diocese of Cleveland.  \nGeorge has served both as a faculty member and a Board member of the Cleveland Ecumenical Institute for Religious Studies for several years and presently serves as the Board President. George resides in Lyndhurst with his cats Jazzy and Sparky. \n  \n  \n  \n
