SUMMARY:Integral Christianity - A Book Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Mike Reiling\n \n  \nIntegral Christianity:\nThe Spirit’s Call to Evolve by Paul R. Smith\nA Book Conversation via Zoom \nSundays: February 21\, 28\,  March 7\,14\, 21\, 28\, 2021 \n7 pm – 8:30 pm \nSession Facilitator: Mike Reiling \n  \n  \nUsing the influential Integral Philosophy popularized by Ken Wilber\, Paul R. Smith in Integral Christianity lays out a unique\, provocative\, and insightful understanding of “developing and evolving churches”. In our sessions\, we will examine states of consciousness and developmental stages of consciousness\, applying them to individual church members and to churches in their different stages of evolution. There will be weekly readings starting after the first session. You can get the book through a local library\, or through Amazon as a book (new or used) or as a Kindle read. \nSession 1 (2/21): Introduction to Integral Thought and Spiral Dynamics (Stages of Human Development). SUMMARY:God and Evil: Two Biblical Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by George Matejka\n \nThe Old Testament [or\, Hebrew Scriptures] preserve(s) narratives [or\, stories] that speak about the ways God has acted.  Some of these stories depict a God who responds to evil with violence.  Recall the stories of the flood and of Sodom and Gomorrah.\nYet other stories describe a God who eschews violence in dealing with evil.  In the story of Adam and Eve as well as that of Cain and Abel\, God deals with evil by way of (nonviolent) expulsion of the evildoers.\nThese two traditions carry over into the Gospel narratives about Jesus.  Understanding the manner of Jesus’ response to evil can provide us with important insights into our own efforts to be faithful disciples of Jesus as we face the challenges of evil in our own lives.\n$15 / session or $35 for all three sessions.\nGeorge Matejka\, Ph.D. is a recently retired Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Ursuline College.  He holds a Master’s in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America and the Ph.D. in Philosophy from Duquesne University.  He also holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology with a Specialization in Biblical Studies from the Gregorian University\, Rome\, Italy.  Before his appointment to Ursuline\, George served on the faculties of Borromeo College of Ohio from 1982-1991 and Notre Dame College of Ohio from 1992-1999. \n Now as an adjunct professor at Ursuline\, George continues to teach Bioethics\, a course required for all Ursuline nursing majors.  Because of his expertise in Bioethics\, George has been appointed to and currently serves on the Ethics Committees of both St. Vincent Charity Medical Center and Jennings Center for Older Adults.  \nGeorge has a strong interest in the ethical dimension of human relationships with animals and has lectured at the National Animal Rights Conference several times.  He has published reviews of several books in the field of Animals and Ethics.  George has lectured at conferences at Oxford University\, England\, as well as at Yale University and Michigan State University.  Locally\, George has offered conferences on biblical\, ethical\, and theological topics in parishes throughout the Diocese of Cleveland.  \nGeorge has served both as a faculty member and a Board member of the Cleveland Ecumenical Institute for Religious Studies for several years and presently serves as the Board President. George resides in Lyndhurst with his cats Jazzy and Sparky. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lenten Bible Study
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Pastor Dennis Stylski \n \nLent is a time of repentance\, discipline and learning. \nThe biblical story is a marvelous tapestry created by many weavers of tales over many centuries\, each with a different understanding of history\, of the relationship of God to the covenant community\, and of how people in that community should believe and act. Join us for this Lenten bible study as we celebrate different interpretations in their uniqueness rather than trying to reconcile them. \nJoin us for this Lenten Bible Study as we celebrate different interpretations in their uniqueness rather than trying to\nreconcile them.\nPhoto by Rob Blair \nBible stories have come to us through layers of retelling in diverse languages and cultures.
From an evolutionary and integral perspective\, there are many churches\, often together in the same building!  Fascinating\, unique\, and enlightening – this book also provides contemporary understandings of God\, prayer\, and worship. \nYou will need the book for these sessions. There will be weekly readings starting after the first session. You can get the book through a local library\, or through Amazon as a book (new or used) or as a Kindle read. \nSession 1 (2/21): Introduction to Integral Thought and Spiral Dynamics (Stages of Human Development). SUMMARY:Franciscan Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Fr. Bob Marva\, OFM Cap. \n\nWhile many religious orders take very structured approaches – such as the Benedictine Rule or the Jesuits’ Ignatian Exercises and Examen – the Franciscans take a much simpler and fundamental approach\, focusing on the gospels as the ultimate guide for living. Join us as we learn how St. Francis relied on the words of Jesus to direct every aspect of his life\, from relying on the gospels for spiritual nourishment to following its directives in taking action in the world\n$15 \nBob Marva is a native Clevelander and has been a Capuchin Friar for 31 years.  Professing perpetual vows in 1993 and ordained a priest in 1997\, “Brother Bob” taught for three years at Borromeo Seminary and John Carroll University before beginning full time pastoral work in the urban church in Cleveland.  Holding his MDiv and MA from Washington Theological Union in Takoma Park\, MD\, Br. Bob was appointed pastor of St. Agnes+Our Lady of Fatima in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood in 2004\, succeeding the efforts of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity. In addition to his ministry at the parish\, Br. Bob is an Advisory Board Member to the Fatima Family Center\, and serves on the board of the Cleveland Capuchin Friars Foundation.  Br. Bob has preached parish missions\, retreats\, and days of recollection in Cleveland and beyond. He was re-elected to the Provincial Council of the Capuchin Province of St. Augustine in 2019 as Vicar Provincial and serves as the local guardian of the Capuchin Community in Cleveland. \n  \n

This Lent we will examine different interpretations in their individual uniqueness\, rather than trying to settle on one “correct” meaning. \nDonations are welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Letting God’s Love In
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Sharon Seyfarth-Garner\n \nColor-Your-Own Mandala Valentines \nTurn your attention from the commercial trappings of Valentine’s Day (cards\, candies and gifts) to God’s love that transcends it all.  Explore how a focus on intercessory prayer can help keep God at the center of our Valentine’s Day celebrations.  Using mandala designs from Sharon’s books (Praying with Mandalas and Mandalas\, Candles\, and Prayer) each participant will prayerfully create two “color-your-own valentine’s cards” to share with those they love.  Show yourself a little self-love by making space for rest and renewal this Valentine’s Day. Then pass on the love through the cards you create and share.  Printable PDF’s of the color-your-own mandala cards will be made available for all participants. \n$20   We will gather via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Mary of Magdala
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Kim Langley\nSpend some time with one of the most interesting\, misunderstood\, and generally talked about women in the New Testament\, Mary of Magdala. We’ll look at how she’s been rendered in classical art\, in church history\, in a careful reading of the scriptures\, and we will steal a glance at her role in a non-canonical work called The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. We’ll try to get in touch with the flesh and blood woman that she was\, her central place in the community that surrounded Jesus\, and why she became an object of speculation\, rumor\, and calumny\, before she finally re-emerged as a respected figure of intense interest today. \n$15 \n  \nKim is a busy facilitator of training and retreats\, for LifeBalance Enterprises\, Inc. She’s a certified lay ecclesial minister who for 10+ years has led conversation circles\, introducing seekers and prayers of all kinds to a mindfulness process that deepens spirituality through poetry. Certified at the Haden Institute as a Spiritual Director\, she’s convinced that lectio divina and the right poems are the perfect match for heart opening and soul healing. Her book\, published in spring 2019\, is for anyone dealing with grief\, including caregivers\, the bereaved\, chaplains\, social workers\, funeral directors\, and health care workers who support families or facilitate grief groups  with end of life issues. \n
