SUMMARY:Franciscan Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Fr. Bob Marva\, OFM Cap. \n\nWhile many religious orders take very structured approaches – such as the Benedictine Rule or the Jesuits’ Ignatian Exercises and Examen – the Franciscans take a much simpler and fundamental approach\, focusing on the gospels as the ultimate guide for living. Join us as we learn how St. Francis relied on the words of Jesus to direct every aspect of his life\, from relying on the gospels for spiritual nourishment to following its directives in taking action in the world\n$15 \nBob Marva is a native Clevelander and has been a Capuchin Friar for 31 years.  Professing perpetual vows in 1993 and ordained a priest in 1997\, “Brother Bob” taught for three years at Borromeo Seminary and John Carroll University before beginning full time pastoral work in the urban church in Cleveland.  Holding his MDiv and MA from Washington Theological Union in Takoma Park\, MD\, Br. Bob was appointed pastor of St. Agnes+Our Lady of Fatima in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood in 2004\, succeeding the efforts of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity. In addition to his ministry at the parish\, Br. Bob is an Advisory Board Member to the Fatima Family Center\, and serves on the board of the Cleveland Capuchin Friars Foundation.  Br. Bob has preached parish missions\, retreats\, and days of recollection in Cleveland and beyond. He was re-elected to the Provincial Council of the Capuchin Province of St. Augustine in 2019 as Vicar Provincial and serves as the local guardian of the Capuchin Community in Cleveland. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lenten Bible Study
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Pastor Dennis Stylski \n \nLent is a time of repentance\, discipline and learning. \nThe biblical story is a marvelous tapestry created by many weavers of tales over many centuries\, each with a different understanding of history\, of the relationship of God to the covenant community\, and of how people in that community should believe and act. Join us for this Lenten bible study as we celebrate different interpretations in their uniqueness rather than trying to reconcile them. \nJoin us for this Lenten Bible Study as we celebrate different interpretations in their uniqueness rather than trying to\nreconcile them.\nPhoto by Rob Blair \nBible stories have come to us through layers of retelling in diverse languages and cultures. This Lent we will examine different interpretations in their individual uniqueness\, rather than trying to settle on one “correct” meaning. \nDonations are welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Letting God’s Love In
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Sharon Seyfarth-Garner\n \nColor-Your-Own Mandala Valentines \nTurn your attention from the commercial trappings of Valentine’s Day (cards\, candies and gifts) to God’s love that transcends it all.  Explore how a focus on intercessory prayer can help keep God at the center of our Valentine’s Day celebrations.  Using mandala designs from Sharon’s books (Praying with Mandalas and Mandalas\, Candles\, and Prayer) each participant will prayerfully create two “color-your-own valentine’s cards” to share with those they love.  Show yourself a little self-love by making space for rest and renewal this Valentine’s Day. Then pass on the love through the cards you create and share.  Printable PDF’s of the color-your-own mandala cards will be made available for all participants. \n$20   We will gather via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Mary of Magdala
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Kim Langley\nSpend some time with one of the most interesting\, misunderstood\, and generally talked about women in the New Testament\, Mary of Magdala. We’ll look at how she’s been rendered in classical art\, in church history\, in a careful reading of the scriptures\, and we will steal a glance at her role in a non-canonical work called The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. We’ll try to get in touch with the flesh and blood woman that she was\, her central place in the community that surrounded Jesus\, and why she became an object of speculation\, rumor\, and calumny\, before she finally re-emerged as a respected figure of intense interest today. \n$15 \n  \nKim is a busy facilitator of training and retreats\, for LifeBalance Enterprises\, Inc. She’s a certified lay ecclesial minister who for 10+ years has led conversation circles\, introducing seekers and prayers of all kinds to a mindfulness process that deepens spirituality through poetry. Certified at the Haden Institute as a Spiritual Director\, she’s convinced that lectio divina and the right poems are the perfect match for heart opening and soul healing. Her book\, published in spring 2019\, is for anyone dealing with grief\, including caregivers\, the bereaved\, chaplains\, social workers\, funeral directors\, and health care workers who support families or facilitate grief groups  with end of life issues. \n

SUMMARY:The Three Faces of God
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Mike Reiling \nUsing the influential and contemporary  Integral Philosophy of Ken Wilber\, Christian pastor Paul R. Smith in his book “Is Your God Big Enough\, Close Enough\, You Enough?” urges us to be more fully present to God\, by regularly attending to God’s “three faces.” This is what Jesus did. This program will develop Wilber and Smith’s ideas so as to provide participants with a much richer and fuller present to God\, a sacred presence- witnessed by Jesus –  that is infinite\, imminent\, and intimate. \nThis program will provide participants with a contemporary framework for being present to God in all God’s fullness. \nParticipants will enrich their understanding of prayer and explore a variety of ways to enter more fully into the Divine Presence. \n$8 / session

SUMMARY:They are My Children\, Too: Empathy in Jewish Biblical Commentary
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Rabbi Enid Lader\nEx. 13:17-17:16 includes “The Song of the Sea” – basically an ancient epic poem that details the glory of God’s victory over Pharaoh and his army. Judges 4:4-5:31 recounts Deborah’s military victory. Rabbinic insights on both of these texts bring out the humanity of all – Jews and non-Jews.\nHow can we learn from this today?\n$15\n\n\n\n\nRabbi Enid Lader is rabbi of Beth Israel – The West Temple where she has been since 2012. Prior to taking that role\, she served as the spiritual leader and rabbi for Knesseth Israel Temple in Wooster\, Ohio\, for ten years. During that time\, she studied at the Academy of Jewish Religion in New York and was ordained on May 13\, 2010. Rabbi Enid\, as she is affectionately known\, began her career in Jewish education at Beth Israel\, where she served as volunteer principal of the Religious School and then\, after her completion of the Cleveland Fellows Program in 1994\, held the community-funded position of Director of Congregational and Family Education at Beth Israel – The West Temple.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShe worked in the Greater Cleveland community as well\, for close to twenty years\, as Community Associate in Family Education\, with Rabbi Dr. Jeffery Schein.  Active in the Educational Directors’ Network\, Rabbi Enid also served in various capacities on the regional board for the UAHC (now URJ). For over twelve years\, she has taught the JECC’s popular Taste of Judaism and Feast of Judaism classes on the West Side. She is currently President of the Rabbis and Cantors Association and is also active in the Lakewood Ministerial Association and Greater Cleveland Congregations.\nA Florida native\, Rabbi Enid lives in Lakewood with her husband\, Harry.

SUMMARY:Dominican Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Janet Schlichting\, OP \nThe Dominican Order found its origins in the preaching of Dominic de Guzman\, a canon of his diocesan cathedral\, at the urging of those who were preaching against the Albigensian heresy  which had taken hold in Southern France. Those who were already preaching were not making headway\, and Dominic had the insight that it was lifestyle that mattered–unless the preachers lived the Gospel counsels\, especially poverty\, itinerancy and mendicancy\, they would not be able to preach the Gospel in truth and in honest dialogue with the people. From this original mission the order quickly grew and spread\, and attained a reputation for preaching\, scholarship and prayer—sharing the fruits of contemplation. Today’s Dominicans interpret the charism in terms of the Four Pillars of Preaching (ministry)\, Contemplation\, Community\, and Study. \n  \n$15\nZoom link will be sent after you have registered. \nJanet Schlichting\, O.P is a Dominican Sister of Peace living in Akron\, Ohio. She holds a B.S. in Art Education\, an M.A. in Liturgy and a D.Min in Preaching from Aquinas Institute of Theology. She has been a  preaching team member\,  on staff at several retreat houses\, and has offered parish missions and retreats for religious congregations. As an educator she has served on the summer faculty at Loyola University\, Chicago; Director of the  Ministry Program at Ursuline College\, Cleveland; and Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Aquinas Institute in St. Louis. Presently\, she is-engaged in art\, preaching\, and adult faith formation. \n
