My mom collected gems of all kinds and some of the specimens that pleased her the most were her geodes. When she passed, I placed one of them in a memorial altar that I created for her. I call the arrangement of objects my “MOMorial”.
Studying this geode in her “MOMorial”one day, I wondered about its creation. Why is there a void inside? Why are there crystals? I began some research.
I learned that spaces can be made during a rock’s creation by an air bubble or by organic material that decomposes; if surrounding conditions are favorable, heat or liquid may find its way into the rock and change it from the inside out. Crystals may form on the walls of the open center. Please excuse this simple explanation of a wondrous occurrence in nature.
What interested me was finding out that the cavity in the stone was present from the beginning and over time the crystals formed its boundaries. Because of readings at Reflective Prayer that brought about imagery of where God resides in us, I -with imagination – thought about what our spiritual centers might look like if visible to us. Perhaps they would resemble the crystal formations: organically clustered gems with dark hollows and light reflecting peaks. I like thinking that the place where God works inside of me sparkles.
May the events at Centering Space continue to make me pause, think, wonder, and imagine! If you have not participated in an activity or have not visited for a quiet respite, come. Centering Space is accessible in person and via Zoom. ~ Ann Duchez
