Dominican Spirituality

January 16, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Facilitated by Janet Schlichting, OP

The Dominican Order found its origins in the preaching of Dominic de Guzman, a canon of his diocesan cathedral, at the urging of those who were preaching against the Albigensian heresy  which had taken hold in Southern France. Those who were already preaching were not making headway, and Dominic had the insight that it was lifestyle that mattered–unless the preachers lived the Gospel counsels, especially poverty, itinerancy and mendicancy, they would not be able to preach the Gospel in truth and in honest dialogue with the people. From this original mission the order quickly grew and spread, and attained a reputation for preaching, scholarship and prayer—sharing the fruits of contemplation. Today’s Dominicans interpret the charism in terms of the Four Pillars of Preaching (ministry), Contemplation, Community, and Study.
