VINCENT VAN GOGH: A Complicated Christian

October 24 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Facilitated by George Matejka on ZOOM

As a Protestant Christian with a father who was a minister, van Gogh’s life was heavily influenced by his Christian upbringing.  Many of his mature works take Gospel themes for their subjects. He painted parables (the Sower, the Good Samaritan) and  miracles (the Raising of Lazarus). There are also several paintings which may subtly portray the  subconscious influence of Christianity on his later works. We will study van Gogh’s gospel-themed paintings as well as those that may  show a deeper influence of his Christian faith on his mature works.

$20

George Matejka has recently retired from his position as Chair of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department at Ursuline College. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Ursuline as well as serving on the Ethics Committees at  Jennings Home for Older Adults.
