Wendell Berry: Poet and Mad Farmer

May 8, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Facilitated by Mary Beth Gray, SND

Wendell Berry has lived and worked in nature all his life. There he finds a deep connection with God. His essays and poetry open our hearts, connecting us more deeply to ourselves, to God, and to the natural world.

He and his wife, now in their eighties, still live on their Kentucky farm. Berry has immersed himself in the natural world, and gifted us with poems. He began writing poetry  in 1979, and continues today. He is an activist for good use of land—writing to politicians and taking part in demonstrations. Berry referred to himself (tongue-in-cheek) as “Mad Farmer,” because he opposed many current realities, especially industrialized farming and thoughtless destruction of land.

We will explore a sampling of his poetry and its relevance in our lives.
Each of our individual actions affect our world, our home.

Come, share, learn!
Materials will be provided.
$15

Mary Beth Gray is a Sister of Notre Dame in Cleveland, OH, with a Master of Arts in Theopoetics and Writing.
Theopoetics is a less doctrinal, more heart-centered, approach to God. It is the art of using words, thoughts, and images that land on the heart, in an aesthetic and inspiring spirituality that is open to myth, metaphor and mystery. She loves poetry and has spent considerable time exploring the poems of Wendell Berry.
