March 2020 Post by Cheryl Keehner, CSA ~ It’s March already, a long way from New Year’s Day. According to the New York Times 44% of us will have either forgotten our resolutions or amended them by now. And to complicate things, for many of us it’s the first week of Lent and we are trying to decide “what we’ll give up” for the season.
After years of trying, we may have to reexamine our motives for making resolutions. Socrates says, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” What a downer. And the Gospels tell us that Jesus said: “Unless you change and become like little children” you won’t make it to heaven. We’re defeated already.
So what are we supposed to do? Here are a few suggestions, “new commandments” taken from contemporary culture: Seize the day; Speak the truth; Keep it simple; Let it be; Trust the process; Practice makes perfect; Encourage one another; Don’t be anxious; Be the change; Get over it; All you need is love.
Pick one of these “commandments” which speaks to you about your life. How might it challenge you? How might it improve your relationships? Is there one you chose to pass over? Why? Do you want to reconsider your choices?
Make a commitment to what you think you can keep “all the way” ‘til Easter. It’s only 6 weeks you know. And “Sundays don’t count”. Just do it.
