Words, Words, Words

February 2020 Blog by Carol Kandiko, CSA ~ The note on the refrigerator says it all: “The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” That anonymous quote was further emphazied by one from Woody in Toy Story: “You see, they don’t want to hear your opinion, they want to hear their opinion coming out of your mouth.” These two viewpoints and a growing awareness that, indeed, I don’t always catch the meaning of what someone else is saying, inspired me to offer a new program here at Centering Space. We’re calling it One Way to Look at It and it’s offered every other month. The next one is scheduled for April 19. The topic is Judging.

“It” can be any topic or concept chosen beforehand. So far “It” has been Holiness, Prayer, Mortality and Angels. Participants gather in a circle with the understanding that each of us has our own interpretation of what the word means. We also assume that there are differences among us. The process begins with a mutual promise that we will really listen to each person’s point of view respectfully and without judgment: no challenging, questioning, criticism.

Then each member of the circle takes a turn describing his or her perception of what the word means. When all have spoken there is animated discussion of similarities, differences, clarifications and insights. All who have come leave feeling their horizons widened and appreciating the uniqueness we each have to share. Becoming more aware of a wider view of reality begins with such small steps.

Each prayer and program experience here at centering Space intends to provide the opportunity to deepen and expand our appreciation of the awesome Universe and the unique and precious individuals with which God has so extravagantly blessed us!

When you can, come and check out your own openness to experience something new!
