Everyone Needs a Safe Place

I often hear people speak of Centering Space as peaceful, quiet, enlightening. All are true. One of my favorite words to describe Centering Space is “safe.” It’s a safe place to be myself, ask questions, express my own unique thoughts and be appreciated. Catholic school taught me what to think, not how to think. I learned to memorize answers, not ask questions. As an elder, I find new ways of thinking to be very exciting. It’s like being given new eyes to see and new ears to hear, along with the freedom to use them. For the last 6 years, centering prayer on Wednesday afternoon has become what I do every Wednesday. The diverse group of people are open, loving and joy-filled. The kitchen, where food is shared, is permeated with laughter. Occasionally tears. Sometimes frustration. But always complete acceptance. Freedom to be one’s real self. Inclusivity is felt as soon as you walk in this gracious old house. Sr. Carol exudes acceptance. The first time I went to Centering Space, I was early. Sr. Carol sat and listened to me talk for 1/2 an hour, just as if I was the most important person in the world. Betsy is like the sister I never had. I always wish she taught me when I was in high school. I’m grateful to have her in my life now. Some say Centering Space is magical. I have trouble using the word magical to describe Centering Space. Magic is magic because it has a secret. If you knew the secret, it wouldn’t be magic. I once went to a magic store… to buy a magic trick of course! The salesperson showed me the trick. I asked how he did it. He told me I had to pay for it first. I had to pay to know the secret. Neither Centering Space nor God’s grace have any secrets. They’re not magical. Perhaps mystical. Grace-filled, yes. God’s grace is not magic. It is not to be paid for. It’s free! CS is a place of freedom.  ~ Sharon Konkoly
